Ask
Log Man: Is it necessary to build log homes
on a specific kind of foundation?
Log Man sez: This
is a rather common question. Log homes are similar to other
homes with regard to the foundation. They can be built on
crawl spaces, slabs, piers, cinder blocks and poured walls.
Unless the terrain suggests otherwise, log homes are commonly
built on foundations where walk out basements are featured.
Poured walls and pre-cast walls seem to be superior to block
foundations in that there is less labor-intensive and get
the same result . . . and they are usually very water tight
- no leaks or fewer leaks. This option, of course, varies
from one geographic area to another.
Incidentally, when reviewing the choice of a slab, crawl
space or full basement, consider that there is very little
cost difference between a crawl space and a full basement.
However, a full basement with nine or 10 foot walls provides
a large amount of usable space, now and for future use considerations.
If nothing else, a full basement provides a good place for
the HVAC unit, hot water heater, pipes, wires and storage.
Of course, when planning for a full basement, be sure to
determine where the basement steps are to be located.
